Why consider Laser Hair Removal?
- A lot of people don’t know that they can get Laser hair removal on darker skin and think that it’s only suitable for lighter skin.
- We have successfully treated thousands of Men and Women with Black skin.
- Remember most Laser clinics do not have the technology or experience to treat Black skin.
What results to expect on Black skin?
- We find that hair on Black skin has a lot of pigment which means that the laser works extremely well. You will see the following benefits:
- Significant Hair Reduction in the treatment area
- Finer softer Hairs.
- Less pigmented Light colour Hairs.
- Eradication of thick coarse Terminal Hairs.
- Smoother Softer Baby Skin. Laser is proven to improve skin texture, heating up the dermis stimulates collagen production.
- It is also common for darker skin types to suffer from ingrown hairs and pigmentation left from these hairs. The laser works very well at clearing these up.
Why is Black skin tricky to treat?
- We need to look at 2 things here, first the Fitzpatrick Skin Type and second How the Laser works.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type
- Looking at the Fitzpatrick skin type gives us information on a particular skin type.
- This is a method used by dermatologist to divide different skin tones into skin types of 1-6.
- We don’t just look at the colour of the skin but take into account ethnicity and genetics. This background tells us how your skin reacts with lasers.
- Black skin will normally fall into skin type 6.
- Skin type 6 is the most complicated of skin types to treat.
- Skin type 6 has more Melanin than any other skin type.
How The Laser Works?
- Now if we go back to how Laser hair removal works you will understand why.
- Laser hair removal works by a gentle burst of laser light which penetrates into the skin to the root of the hair. It targets the brown pigment (melanin) in the hair shaft. The hair absorbs the light energy and converts it to heat. Thus heating up the follicle and disabling the hair growth mechanism.
- Melanin is the main target for Laser. Melanin is what gives the skin colour and black skin has the most Melanin compared to other skin types.
- Some Lasers and IPLs can mistake the Melanin in the skin and cause complications such as burns and pigmentation particularly in Black skin.
- Our Laser for Black skin avoids this problem. Our specific Laser with the correct wavelength and depth of penetration allows the heat to absorb the follicles and avoid damaging the surrounding skin.
How Laser works for Black Skin!
- Our specific Laser technology for black skin is completely safe. We use a medical grade FDA approved technology for Black skin.
- Our Laser for Black skin works effectively to remove the hair and not destroy the pigment of the skin for a very good reason and the reason is it is looking for the pigment of the hair not the pigment of the skin.
- With its ability to bypass the pigment in the skin and target only the root of the hair it is considered the gold standard Laser by medics for use in Black skin.
Science of our Laser
- Our Laser for Black skin does not have a very good Melanin absorption which means that it safe on Black skin.
- The reduced melanin absorption results in less skin heating compared to other Lasers and there is a lower risk of epidermal damage.
- In fact, it is poorly absorbed by Melanin, Blood and Water. The reduced absorption for these chromophores means that the Laser penetration depths are relatively high. This enables the laser energy to easily reach the hair bulb and bulge region and cause follicular damage, resulting in long-lasting hair reduction.
- This diagram shows that our Laser still targets Brown but is much safer than standard lasers as can be seen by the less intense burns.
LASER | NORMAL LASER | OUR SPECIFIC LASER |
---|---|---|
Wavelength (nm) | 755 | 1064 |
Spotsize (mm) | 15 | 15 |
Pulse duration (ms) | 20 | 20 |
Fluence (J/cm²) | 15 | 15 |
Cooling level | 1 | 1 |
- Normal laser targets brown pigment (melanin) considerably better than our specific laser for Black skin. But our laser can still target brown, as can be seen by the less intense burns! It is much safer on dark skin types!
Our Treatment Protocol for Black skin
- We have a specific protocol for treating Black skin. We use a longer wavelength and pulse duration.
- Our Settings are less traumatic and gentler on Black skin.
- Our experienced Laser Practitioners will analyse your skin and will know exactly which settings to use.
- Our Laser can be used to treat hair on any part of the body and we adjust parameters according to the body area we are treating such as Bikini and Under Arms where the skin can be even darker.
- Our Advanced cooling system not only protects the epidermis of Black skin, but makes the treatments very comfortable.
- Our Laser Practitioners have received specialised training in laser hair removal for Black skin, and this is an invaluable safeguard.
IPL is not an option for Black skin
- This is absolutely NOT suitable for Black skin.
- IPL has strong absorption of melanin and therefore greater risk of pigmenting a client.
- It’s actually possible to pigment someone with this.
- IPLs are NOT safe for Black skin. Lasers are more selective and more effective.
- Laser is one colour of one light whereas IPL is non- specific and has a number of wavelengths entering the skin therefore more risk to darker skin.
Ingrown Hairs
- For women and men of African descent the hair tends to be dark thick and curly.
- This can lead to ingrown hairs (pseudofolliculitis babae) and dark discolorations.
- There are many side effects that are associated with ingrown hairs.
- Our Laser treatment will eradicate these ingrown hairs.
- This tends to be hereditary.

Razor Bumps
- It’s very common for African Men to suffer from Razor Bumps.
- The irritations are the body’s natural response to ingrown hairs, and this can lead to pustules on the face. The skin can become inflamed and infected.
- Hyper and hypo-pigmented scars and discolouration of the skin can look unsightly.
- In severe cases, Keloid scarring can form leaving raised rubbery lesions on the skin.
- Our Laser hair Removal system for Back skin will eradicate this problem leading to smooth soft skin with even tone and no more ingrown hairs.
- You will be relieved of having to shave and deal with scarring.
Sun protection
- All skin types including Black skin need to use sun protection cream after Laser Hair Removal.
- Some people with dark skin believe they do not need to use sun protection. Whilst it’s true that darker skin has more Melanin (natural SPF) therefore more protection against the sun compared with Light skin, this only offers minimal protection.
- Dark skin is more prone to hyper-pigmentation, and therefore wearing sunscreen prevents this damage.

4 Easy steps for Hair-free skin
Hair-free Consultation
This is a Free consultation with our laser technician to determine your skin and hair type and assess whether you are suitable for treatment.
Hairfree Test Patch
The laser technician will perform your requested treatment on a small area to check for suitability and skin reaction. You will need to wait one to two weeks after the test patch before you can book your session.
Hairfree Treatment
The treatment is performed by our trained and certified therapists. Our therapists have been trained under the guidance of a Laser Protection Advisor and a Consultant Nurse and have reached the standard required by Polaris, Candela and Lynton training schools to operate these machines safely.
Hairfree Post Treatment Advice
After your treatment you need to follow the post treatment advice.
